im gonna be filming a band playing at a concert, and will have two cameras recording simultaniuosly... now how should i record the sound?

the band will be recorded onto CD, and i could record it onto MD but will that synch up in editing? or should i take a feed from the mixing desk streight into a camera?

any help is much appreciated

Cool

If the band is being mixed then get a feed straight from the mixing desk into your camera or into a minidisc, place some mics around the audience to record some audience reactions and cheering to mix in with the band mix.

How many mics have you got? The best away to sync is to record using a mic attached to your camera...minidisk is never gonna be bang on.

the good thing about ALL digital formats is that they don't suffer from 'wow and flutter', so actual sync between the cameras/md/cd/dat etc will not be a problem.

HOWEVER
the sound mix is probably the biggest problem here. i'd either place mics myself (probably not practical in this instance), record from the mixing desk, or go for that 'live' sound by using one of the camera's soundtracks :-)

miniDV is capable of recording 16-bit/48KHz, make sure you have it selected if you are relying on the camera sound (if it's even DV)!!

then in post you lay down the soundtrack with your master shot and paste over the cracks with your insert-edits ... 'itsa peece a cake'

good luck!

If your using Final Cut Pro I've got a red hot tip for you.Select the Audio clip in the time-line then play the clip and tap the key "M" in time with the music this will add a marker on each beat .This makes making transitions and cuts easy to do in time with the music.
